We are the dreamers.
We are the world changers.
We are the TRIBE builders.
Do you feel that?
What exactly are you feeling?
Inside. In your chest.
Are you on the verge of massive action?
Today, I am writing to those with a burning desire that is on the verge of leaping out of your chest.
You are so ready to change the world, you can just taste it.
You recognize your gifts and strengths, and understand that there is nothing but resistance standing between you and living out your purpose wholeheartedly and fully alive.
And resistance? Pfffft!
It can try all it wants, but you got this… this is your time and you’re ready to plow right through resistance like a star running back cuts through the defensive line into the end zone. (OK, I promise no more football analogies… I just get excited this time of year)
Does this sound like YOU?
If so, good. Keep reading…
The sky is the limit for you at this point…
There’s usually really only one hurdle standing between you and the next level for someone at your stage:
How To Define, Find and Attract Your True Target Audience
Do these summarize and encapsulate the hurdle that you are recognizing…
- Not sure who has needs that I can serve.
- Not sure who my TRIBE is.
- Not sure where to find the people that will make up my TRIBE.
- Not sure how to draw them to me so we can help each other.
Defining, finding and attracting your TRIBE is exactly what we will dive into in the next series of conversations here at TRIBE.LY.
What are your biggest questions about…
- Defining your TRIBE
- Finding your TRIBE
- Attracting your TRIBE
Please do everyone in the TRIBE here a huge favor, and post your questions below in the comments so we can be sure to cover them in the upcoming series — that way we can all benefit from a discussion about those areas you’re not sure about.
Meanwhile, today, the following thoughts on defining your TRIBE or target audience might spark some thought for you…
Most businesses set out and try to sell WHAT they do. Don’t worry, it’s a common trap. Most people get stuck here, and so you are not alone if you started out in this direction. In fact, the majority of businesses operate from this position, so its not entirely horrible to be here…
But, I see most of those businesses:
- Working hard to win pricing wars (commodity challenges)
- Struggling to differentiate against fierce competition
- Having a difficult time breaking into saturated niches and markets
The root cause of these challenges stem from how we go about defining our target audience (as well as how we speak to and engage the target audience). With this said, let’s explore some fresh ideas in these areas that could revolutionize how we approach the marketplace for the gifts and strengths that we bring.
The 3-Letter Word That Will Compel Your TRIBE To Follow You and Buy From You
Even with all the right intentions, selling WHAT you do is too overplayed. You are following the crowd, often coming across as inauthentic, and none of this helps you in a time when competitive differentiation is crucial.
There is one 3-letter word that will empower you in the process of defining your target audience.
Now, I realize your time is valuable and short, but I’m going to be bold and challenge you to set aside 18 minutes sometime today to watch this TED Talk by Simon Sinek. If you’ve seen it already, watch it again, this time through the lens of defining your own target audience and TRIBE. I promise the ROI on these 18 minutes will be worth it.
If the MLK Jr. example Sinek used in the last 3 minutes, hasn’t convinced you of the power of your WHY — the beliefs, the dreams — over the power of the plan and what you do, I’m not sure what ever will. (be sure to check out Simon Sinek’s book, Starting With Why)
In our Artist’s Flight Formula Mastermind Groups, we just began great conversations about defining our target audiences, and thus far, it has led us toward connection through shared beliefs. Here are a few key realizations that have come out of these conversations and Simon Sinek’s talk above:
- Your TRIBE will connect with you because they believe what you believe.
- Your TRIBE does not buy what you do. Your TRIBE buys why you do it.
- To define your TRIBE, you must define what you believe first. Lead with your WHY. Lead with your beliefs.
Everything is shifting in the new economy.
Today’s buyers, readers, and fans are tired of the commodity markets of WHAT.
Your WHAT puts you in direct competition over price.
WHAT is boring. It does nothing to connect us.
People are looking for brands, writers, coaches, teachers and products that are in touch with their reason WHY. Because when your WHY aligns with their WHY, suddenly, you stand together in a movement that can change the world for the better. You can decide together, to do things differently, to alter the course of status quo, and to take down the machines that could care less about WHY.
The core of our humanity thrives on belief, hope, and WHY.
The more you embrace this, and see your own beauty in your response to the question of WHY, the more people with the same questions and responses will be drawn to you, and look to you to connect them, engage them, and lead them in ways that can ultimately serve their needs.
The TRIBE exists, grows, and thrives at the intersection of common WHYs.
You want to define your TRIBE?
Define your WHY. Know what you believe, and talk about it.
Practice right now in the comments below. Tell us what you believe about yourself, the world, the needs you can serve, your niche, etc. – be open to critique and feedback – this is safe space to work on your skills as a TRIBE builder (and I can say from experience, you really only improve yourself in community space like this).
In the next post, I’m thinking about covering some very specific tactical approaches to finding and attracting your TRIBE. This involves conversation about increasing your traffic, visitors, exposure etc. I might dive right into tools like SEO and Guest Posting. Is this an area you would like to explore more with me? If so, post a comment below, and be sure to include any questions you might have about defining, finding and attracting your TRIBE.
